Vikings 2012 Mock Draft - Updated 3/28/12.

Round 1, Pick 3, 3rd overall: Matt Kalil, OT, USC - This is pretty much a given. It's not often a franchise OT like Kalil comes around and obviously Charlie Johnson is not as good as protecting the blind side as hoped when he was signed. And with this pick, Johnson could move to left guard where it is said he will be more comfortable. If the Vikings plan on keeping Ponder as their future QB, then they need to develop an OL that will protect him!

**Alternate Pick - NONE!!! The Vikings would be stupid not to make this pick and it's unlikely that a trade will present itself for this pick at this point.**

Round 2, pick 3, 35th overall: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina -  If Stephen Hill drops to this spot, that would be a dream come true!! But Jeffery still could be a legitimate #1 receiver for the Vikings but due to less production in 2011 than 2010 and being ejected from his last game after getting in a fight with Alfonzo Dennard, Jeffery is projected to drop far in the the 2nd Round beyond the 35th pick of the Vikings. Also, he did not participate in the combine this year. At the South Caroline Pro Day, Jeffery ran 40's in the high 4.40's to low 4.50's. He also dropped weight from 235 during the 2011 season to 215 at the Pro Day. If he's drafted, it would be important for the Vikings to place a weight clause in his contract.

**Alternate Pick - Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska**

Round 3, pick 3, 66th overall: Brandon Boykin, CB/KR/PR, Georgia - 2011 was a good season for Boykin who had 55 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, 9 passes broken up, 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. Boykin averaged 22 yards per kick return and 13 yards per punt return. This could help reduce the work load of Harvin, allowing him to focus on his role as our current #1 receiver.

**Alternate Pick - Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa**

Round 4,  pick 3, 98th overall: George Iloka, S, Boise State - Iloka was a big part of the secondary at Boise State, preventing the deep play. This could present a problem in the NFL as he struggles mirroring players and will likely not be able to line up as deep as he did with Boise but still a solid upgrade for the S position of the Vikings and keep Mistral Raymond in the FS position.

**Alternate Pick - Nick Jean-Baptist, DT/NT, Baylor**

Round 4, pick 33 (compensatory pick), 128th overall: A.J. Jenkins, WR, Illinois - This would be a great opportunity for the Vikings to continue to add depth to the WR position despite signing Devin Aromashodu this last week.  He caught 90 passes for 1,276 yards and eight touchdowns in his 2011 season. Jenkins would be fast off the ball, with a 4.39 40 time, and potential to get released, but struggles when he's hit on the take off. His production at Illinois could help develop our young QB with another younger receiver and would be a solid #2 outside receiver.

**Alternate Pick - Levy Adcock, OT/G, Oklahoma State**

Round 4, pick 39 (compensatory pick), 134th overall: James-Michael Johnson, ILB, Nevada - ILB is a strong need for the Vikings. He had 100 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, 1 interception and 1 forced fumble in 2011. Johnson is a strong tackler, that is able to fill the gap, shed blocks quickly and make plays on the ball. He is able to identify pass/run quickly. He does struggle in man coverage, but would fit nicely into the Vikings zone defense.

**Alternate Pick - Robert Turbin, RB, Utah State**

Round 5, pick 3, 138th overall: Mike Daniels, DT, Iowa. DT is turning into a position in need of depth with releasing Remi Ayodele. Daniels is fast off the ball, with a 4.83 40 time, and is able to get in between blockers. Daniels recorded 67 tackles with nine sacks, and 10.5 tackles for a loss in his 2011 season. However, his size can also result in him getting engulfed by big blockers and struggles with double teams. He could fit into a rotation package or serve as a back up.

**Alternate Pick - Janzen Jenkins, FS, McNeese State**

Round 6, pick 5 (From Cleveland), 175th overall: Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego State: Burris had 78 tackles including 19.5 tackles for a loss, 8 sacks and one pass broken up during his Senior year. Burris is able to cover in zone and in man but his speed can be exposed in space. Burris is able to get in the box and plug gaps as well. He is a development prospect that would serve well as a back up on the roster and package player.

**Alternate Pick - Derel Moye, WR, Penn State**

Round 7, pick 3, 210th overall: Nathan Stupar, OLB, Penn State - Stupar had 80 tackles with 5.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, two interceptions and three passes defended this year. He proved to be an asset to the Penn State Defense. However, Stupar is undersized as a LB and can struggle with shedding blocks due to his size. But he possesses the talent to be a back up on the roster and a strong special teams player.

**Alternate Pick - Desmond Wynn, G, Rutgers**

Round 7, pick 16 (from New England), 223rd overall: Antwuan Reed, CB, Pittsburgh - Good down field protection but could easily get beat on quick passes due to his quick turning to run with the receiver. Poor ball skills to make plays despite quick reaction on routes. His speed will add benefits to special teams.

**Alternate Pick - Brandon Lindsey, DE, Pittsburgh**

CB Zack Bowman Signs with Vikings

CD Zack Bowman is a 27 year old former Bears CB. He signed a 1 year agreement with the Vikings. His NFL Career states 115 tackles, 7 interceptions and 11 pass deflections. He was drafted by the Bears in the 2008 draft in the 5th round. His biggest year was in 2009 when he played 16 games, starting 12 of them. He had 59 solo and 7 assisted tackles, 6 interceptions, 1 forced fumble and 10 pass deflections. This will help the Vikings add depth to the depleted secondary.

Vikings 2012 Mock Draft - 3/27/12

Round 1, Pick 3, 3rd overall: Matt Kalil, OT, USC - This is pretty much a given. It's not often an OT prospect like Kalil comes around and obviously Charlie Johnson is not as good as protecting the blind side as hoped when he was signed. And with this pick, Johnson could move to left guard where it is said he will be more comfortable.

**Alternate Pick - Unlikely, but trade with Dolphins, sliding to number 8 and picking Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa and picking up at least another second round this year and selecting a quality DB**

Round 2, pick 3, 35th overall: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina - At the start of the 2011 season, Jeffery was projected as a top 10 in the first round. But due to less production in 2011 than 2010 and being ejected from his last game after getting in a fight with Alfonzo Dennard. Also, he did not participate in the combine this year. All this results in him potentially dropping to the 2nd round. He is excellent potential for a number 1 receiver. Many mocks have Jeffery falling even beyond the 35th pick.

**Alternate Pick - Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska**

Round 3, pick 3, 66th overall: Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia - In 2011, Boykin had 55 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, 9 passes broken up, 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. Thanks to the CB depth in this years draft, it is likely that Boykin will end up falling to the 3rd Round.

**Alternate Pick - Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin**

Round 4,  pick 3, 98th overall: George Iloka, S, Boise State - Iloka was a big part of the secondary at Boise State, preventing the deep play. This could present a problem in the NFL as he struggles mirroring players and will likely not be able to line up as deep as he did with Boise but still a solid upgrade for the S position of the Vikings

**Alternate Pick - Mike Martin, DT/DE, Michigan**

Round 4, pick 33, 128th overall: James-Michael Johnson, ILB, Nevada - ILB is a strong need for the Vikings. Johnson is a strong tackler, that is able to fill the gap, shed blocks quickly and make plays on the ball. He is able to identify pass/run quickly. He does struggle in man coverage, but would fit nicely into the Vikings zone defense.

**Alternate Pick - Senio Kelemete, OT/G, Washington**

Round 4, pick 39, 134th overall: Mike Daniels, DT, Iowa. DT is turning into a position in need of depth. Daniels is fast off the ball and is able to get in between blockers. However, his size can also result in him getting engulfed by big blockers and struggles with double teams.
**Alternate Pick - Demario Davis, OLB, Arkansas State**

Round 5, pick 3, 138th overall: A.J. Jenkins, WR, Illinois - This would be a great opportunity for the Vikings to continue to add depth to the WR position despite signing Devin Aromashodu this last week. Jenkins would be fast off the ball and potential to get released, but struggles when he's hit on the take off. His production at Illinois could help develop our young QB with another younger receiver.
**Alternate Pick - Brandon Taylor, S, LSU**

Round 6, pick 5 (From Cleveland), 175th overall: Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego State: Erin Henderson has not yet been signed, and even if, will need some depth. Burris is an explosive LB, able to cover in zone and in man but his speed can be exposed in space. Burris is able to get in the box and plug gaps as well.

**Alternate Pick - Derel Moye, WR, Penn State**

Round 7, pick 3, 210th overall: Nathan Stupar, OLB, Penn State - Stupar is undersized as a LB and can struggle with shedding blocks.

**Alternate Pick - Brandon Lindsey, DE, Pittsburgh**

Vikings Free Agency Update 3/25/12

Below is the list I've been running of suggested free agents the Vikings should look into. However, the numbers are starting to fall. I elected to add Aromashodu to the list as the Vikings did re-sign him, and yes, he's in the right spot for the list, in my opinion. I'll continue to update this as changes are made or if we bring in any more players for the respected position. One thing to note, is Jasper Brinkley is being considered to start for the ILB position that E.J. Henderson is no longer occupying.

WR:
1) Jerome Simpson, 26, Bengals
2) Braylon Edwards, 29, 49ers
3) Mario Manningham, 26, Giants **Signed with 49ers**
4) Eddie Royal, 26, Broncos **Signed with Chargers**
5) Early Doucet, 26, Cardinals  **Re-signed by Cardinals**
6) Devin Aromashodu **Re-signed by Vikings**
7) Ted Ginn, Jr., 27, 49ers **Re-signed by 49ers**

CB:
1) Tracy Porter, 26 , Saints **Signed with Broncos**
2) William Middleton, 26 , Jaguars
3) Jason Allen, 29, Texans **Signed with Bengals**
4) Chris Carr, 29, Ravens (Visiting Vikings)
5) William Gay, 27, Steelers **Signed with Cardinals**

ILB:
1) Stephen Tulloch, 27, Lions **Re-signed by Lions**
2) Curtis Lofton, 26, Falcons**Signed with Saints**
3) Dan Connor, 26, Panthers **Signed with Cowboys**
4) David Hawthorne, 27, Seahawks
5) Chase Blackburn, 29, Giants

Devin Aromashodu re-signed plus other Vikigns updates

So I've been gone for a weekend, but not too much has happened this weekend. My last blog discussed the re-signing Erin Henderson to a 1 year, $2 million dollar contract. Later on that day, it was determined that WR Devin Aromashodu re-signed a one year contract also. This likely happened when Ted Ginn, Jr. re-signed with the 49ers, but might not be a bad idea. Ponder and Aromashodu appeared to developing a good connection and it seemed like Aromashodu could be a potential deep threat. Aromashodu will be turning 28 6 days after I turn 29 so he will be 28 during the 2012 season. Last season was his best year. He caught career high 26 passes, career high 468 yards and only 1 touchdown. Maybe that's the start of a good career for him, this season could tell us. However, I still feel like drafting Alshon Jeffrey or another potential #1 receiver would be the best 2nd round pick in the 2012 draft that the Vikings could make to give us a good #1 receiver.

CB Chris Carr visited the Vikings on Friday, but left without a contract. I'm not fully sure why, as he spent much of last season injured and that seems to attract the Vikings to players. But aside from that, Carr has had a good career and could add some needed depth to the CBs of the Vikings. Like everyone else, I'll just have to wait and see what Carr decides to do.

In relation to my mock draft, it sounds like compensatory picks will be announced Monday or Tuesday of this week. Once that happens, my mock will be updated to reflect the correct compensatory picks.

And as far as the draft go, there are a number of prospects scheduled to visit the Vikings, including but not limited to, Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford, Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama and Trumaine Johnson, DB, Montana as well as a few others. This creates more speculation as to whether or not the Vikings will draft Matt Kalil with the 3rd overall pick, which is most recommended they should.

Erin Henderson re-signs with Vikings; Ted Ginn, Jr. signs with 49ers

So news just broke that OLB Erin Henderson has re-signed with the Vikings. This is great news as people have been clamoring for weeks to get him re-signed. It is a 1 year, $2 Million deal. This helps the Vikings reduce the needs for the LB position, now only needing an ILB and back up OLB. I would recommend the Vikings to host Curtis Lofton for the ILB position, and draft one or two LBs.

Other free agency news is that WR Ted Ginn, Jr. who was given an offer by the Vikings decided to sign with the 49ers on a 1 year deal. So should the Vikings go after another free agency WR? Leave a comment below to start a discussion thread. I don't think they should and just go after 2 or 3 WRs in the draft.

Chris Carr visiting, Ted Ginn Jr. Mulling

It's being reported that veteran CB Chris Carr will be visiting the Vikings, coming to Minnesota this evening. Carr, a former Ravens CB, started his career as an undrafted rookie with the Raiders in 2005. After two years he went to the Titans for one year before spending 3 seasons with the Ravens starting in 2009. The Vikings were interested in Carr in 2009 before he signed with the Ravens. Carr did miss 7 games in 2011 due to a back injury. However appears that he is healthy now. Carr has a career 210 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 6 interceptions and 7 forced fumbles. Carr has also served a punt and kick returner. This will help provide depth to the secondary if Carr is signed by the Vikings.

Ted Ginn Jr. has been given an offer by the Vikings but remains at home mulling over which team he would like to sign to. No further updates on him and will keep updating as news roles out.

2012 Vikings Mock Draft - Updated 3/21/12

Round 1, Pick 3, 3rd overall: Matt Kalil, OT, USC - This is pretty much a given. It's not often an OT prospect like Kalil comes around and obviously Charlie Johnson is not as good as protecting the blind side as hoped when he was signed. And with this pick, Johnson could move to left guard where it is said he will be more comfortable.

**Alternate Pick - Unlikely, but trade with Dolphins, sliding to number 8 and picking Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa and picking up at least another second round this year and selecting Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina or Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska**

**Alternate Pick - Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina**

Round 3, pick 3 67th overall: Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia - In 2011, Boykin had 55 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, 9 passes broken up, 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. Thanks to the CB depth in this years draft, it is likely that Boykin will end up falling to the 3rd Round.

**Alternate Pick - Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin**

Round 3, compensatory pick: George Iloka, S, Boise State - Iloka was a big part of the secondary at Boise State, preventing the deep play. This could present a problem in the NFL as he struggles mirroring players and will likely not be able to line up as deep as he did with Boise but still a solid upgrade for the S position of the Vikings

Round 4, pick 3: James-Michael Johnson, ILB, Nevada - ILB is a strong need for the Vikings. Johnson is a strong tackler, that is able to fill the gap, shed blocks quickly and make plays on the ball. He is able to identify pass/run quickly. He does struggle in man coverage, but would fit nicely into the Vikings zone defense.

**Alternate Pick - Tyrone Crawford, DT, Boise State**

Round 4, compensatory pick: A.J. Jenkins, WR, Illinois - Vikings should look to bolster their WR corps. to give Ponder as many weapons as he can. This would be a smart pick if they are unable to resign Devin Aromashodu. Jenkins has the ability to get separation and has quick speed off the ball. But he does appear to not always put forth his full effort every play.

Round 5, pick 3: Mike Daniels, DT, Iowa. With Remi getting cut today, DT is turning into a position of depth. Daniels is fast off the ball and is able to get in between blockers. However, his size can also result in him getting engulfed by big blockers and struggles with double teams.

**Alternate Pick - Brandon Taylor, S, LSU**

Round 6, pick 6 (From Cleveland): Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego State: Erin Henderson has not yet been signed, and even if, will need some depth. Burris is an explosive LB, able to cover in zone and in man but his speed can be exposed in space. Burris is able to get in the box and plug gaps as well.

Round 7, pick 3: Desmond Wynn, G, Rutgers - Good run blocker with athleticism, but struggles against the pass rush. Good developmental prospect to add some depth besides the signing of Schwartz.

Round 7, pick 16 (from New England): Antwuan Reed, CB, Pittsburgh - Good down field protection but could easily get beat on quick passes due to his quick turning to run with the receiver. Poor ball skills to make plays despite quick reaction on routes.

Round 7, compensatory pick: Nathan Stupar, OLB, Penn State - Stupar is undersized as a LB and can struggle with shedding blocks. But he possesses the talent to be a back up on the roster and a strong special teams player.
The Vikings lost Round 6, Pick 3 to Washington for the horrible Donovan McNabb trade.

May The Power Of The Schwartz Be With You (Vikings)!

That title was just too easy considering my affection for classic 80's comedies. Yes, I just said classic 80's. But that's some great news to hear! Geoff Schwartz has signed a 1 year contract with the Vikings. Geoff Schwartz tweeted, "Excited to be a Minnesota #Vikings!!!" Finances are not available but I'm more than likely going to give this a grade of A. I changed that from a B+ the more I thought about it because his doctor has fully cleared him and sent letters to all interested organizations. And the more I think about it, this is an amazing signing by the Vikings! There will be some competition on the right side between Berger, Fusco and Schwartz for the RG position and Schwartz has proven himself at the RT position and could provide competition for Loadholt. We'll have to see what the preseason brings and how the line is established. Regardless, this is one Vikings fan that is excited to bring this young talent to the team and hopefully this year is a successful one and he is given a nice long contract to bring this youth movement forward and surrounding Ponder with great protection, as well as weapons. I know I'm not the first to say this, but welcome to the team Schwartz!!!

Another free agent move today was cutting DT Remi Ayodele, which surprises me didn't happen earlier. But in lieu of the penalties being issued to the Saints today, they elected to cut him instead of waiting to hear what his punishment is going to be. More to come on the Saints ordeal. That's just too big not to blog about but deserves it's own blog.

These moves will contribute to my mock draft, which I most likely will update within the next 24 hours.

Vikings sign Jerome Felton, Host Ted Ginn, Jr.

FB Jerome Felton has found a new home with the Minnesota Vikings today. He will be competing with Ryan D'Imperio for the starting FB position once the season starts. Felton is entering his 5th season, following up after starting with the Lions, then Panthers, and finally the Colts. Backfield depth could be complete with this signing and yesterday's signing of RB Lex Hilliard. And since this is such a big name singing *cough, cough*, I won't go into a lot of detail here. In additional news, Guion's deal is now official. It had been previously agreed to (3years/$9 mil) but had not yet been signed until today. Also, The Vikings hosted former 49ers WR Ted Ginn, Jr. I'm not a huge fan of this, but after looking at it from another perspective, it would be a great special teams signing. It would allow him to go to KR/PR, competing with Marcus Sherels and allowing Harvin to focus on his role as the teams most important WR. However, an offer has not been extended to him as of yet, that I've heard of anyway, so that's just a thought. More updates to come as the Vikings continue to sign such big names to such important roles.

Draft madness or Spielman stupidity?

I just read a very interesting thread (http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=63&f=1554&t=8826016) discussion how Spielman possibly likes Claiborne better than Kalil. This has to be madness!! How often do you see a LT like Kalil come along?? And what would build Ponder's confidence more than to have protection!! There's also talk of the Vikings possibly selecting Blackmon over Kalil to give Ponder a #1 receiver. This is just speculation however. But the fact that Spielman made comments that would lead to the though he would draft a shut down corner like Claiborne for a Tampa 2 defense is ludicrous! I honestly don't know how we can pass up on Kalil, or if we trade back Reiff or Martin. With how poor the Vikings' OL played last year, it would only cause more damage to Ponder, both physically and mentally. Everyone saw him regress as the weeks went on, and much of this was due to his lack of experience and the lack of protection he was offered. I stand with the majority of the fans in saying DON'T BE A FOOL AND SELECT KALIL!!!

The Mess That Is the Vikings' Free Agency

But to start, the dream of getting Landry at Safety is out the window. He signed with the Jets. So the Vikings made an offer to their free agent S, Husain Abdullah. I question this considering the conconussions he had, and spending so much time on IR in 2011 due to a concussion. I feel they'd be better off looking at Reggie Smith, S, 49ers.

Secondly, the CB pool is becoming threatened. Tracy Porter is visiting with the Titans, has visited the Bengals and has interest from the Rams, Raiders and Saints. William Gay is also visiting the Titans. Of course Adam 'Pacman' Jones is still out there too... His past is behind him... I'm really starting to think that with Chris Cook be acquitted of all charges that the Vikings won't go after a CB in the free agency and will wait for the draft to address this need. In fact, it's said that Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick which makes me think they might be trading their number #3 pick. I would still disagree with picking him due to their VERY big need for a GOOD LT (Matt Kalil at #3, Riley Reiff or Jonathan Martin if we trade). Geoff Schwartz visited and would be a good RG/RT but don't think he'd fit into the LT role currently occupied by Charlie Johnson who needs to move to LG.

No more talk about WRs and no word if Devin Aromashodu has been made an offer as of yet by the Vikings. Again, I'm thinking the Vikings may just wait for the draft to address this. The WR position is deep and for some reason, some people think that Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd might fall to the 2nd round. If that happened, that would be gold struck if he's still available at the Vikings 35th pick! Floyd (ND), Rudolph(ND), Carlson(ND), Harvin. That would look nice!!

The thing I was most shocked about was the fact that FB Jerome Felton is visiting the Vikings tomorrow. They just signed Lex Hilliard yesterday, why are they bringing in Felton? It was my understanding that Hilliard was brought in to fill the FB role? Who knows. But Felton is a former FB from the Colts who signed him after the Panther waived him after the Lions waived him after they drafted him in the 5th round of the 2008 draft. Never scored a touchdown, has 136 rushing yards averaging 3.2 yards a run and 34 receptions for 280 yards. He is 6'0" and 241 lbs. Definitely fits the bill for a FB.

But I'm starting to get too confused with what the Vikings are doing. Desperately need to sign Henderson, a WR, an ILB, a CB and they keep refusing to make any of those moves. Granted, WR and CB can be addressed early in the draft, so Erin Henderson and a young ILB should be priority. I know Tulloch, Lofton and Hawthorne are still available...

This is the mess that is the Vikings' free agency! More to come...

Some fresh free agency news!

So tonight, the Vikings came to a 1 year deal with former Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard to add depth to the RB position being that Adrian Peterson might not be able to play for the first month or so and to add a solid blocking back in the absence of Jim Kleinsasser. I haven't gotten the finances yet and will update this blog when I do. Depending on the finances, this may not have been the worst deal.

In further free agency news, the Vikings sound like they want to re-sign WR Devin Aromashodu because of potential chemistry with Ponder. It's also stated that they're pondering (no pun intended) the idea of pursuing Ted Gin, JR, WR, 49ers. Not sure why, everyone remembers the colossal muffs he had last season. And thank goodness the Vikings aren't going to go after Alan Ball!! Much better choices for DB's available. Speaking of that, the rumors that O.J. Atogwe might be visiting might not be true. Now lets hope that the Vikings are the mystery team that he is going to be visiting. That would be a good boost to our Secondary! But that may just be a dream. And of course, resigning either Erin and maybe E.J. Henderson to the LB positions they held. Definitely Erin to the WLB position.

Then the business at the G position with Geoff Schwartz visiting and that the news today that Rex Hadnot is now available. One of the favorite people that Spielman drafted in 2004 while at Miami. Does that mean if the Vikings don't embrace the Power of the Schwartz they're go after Hadnot? This will be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm sure there will be a lot more to write about in the coming days, maybe even tonight!

Vikings still searching the free agency.

As I put in my previous blog, below is an updated list of the free agents I felt the Vikings should be targeting. As of now, only four of the fifteen free agents I put in have signed, but that still means the pool is getting smaller, with many of the other getting some strong looks from other teams. But Coach Frazier was quoted as saying the Vikings are still in the market for a deep threat WR. Well, who does that leave in the free agency? Not much. The top two I have listed are probably the best options, but Jerome Simpson's alleged drug connections poses a big risk which is why he likely hasn't garnished any looks at this point and Edwards battled injuries all last season and who's to say he'll perform in the WR at his highest potential. Edwards could be worth signing to a one year prove it deal. Early Doucet just isn't a deep threat, but still has some good qualities. I think this need will be best addressed in the draft with the Vikings 2nd or 3rd pick. Quality receivers and potential deep threats will still be available at those picks.

The CB market still has some talent in it, but the Vikings were apparently talking to Alan Ball, former DB from the Cowboys (face palm!) despite that talent and O.J. Atogwe for the S position. And ILB is still a position in need as E.J. will hopefully be moving on to get younger in that position. Many of the ILBs on the list below have garnered a lot of attention from other teams. Particularly Lofton and Hawthorne.

And of course, the Vikings still need to a get E.J.'s brother Erin a contract!! Erin has expressed his frustration with the Viking's lack of apparent interest, despite him saying he's not asking for a lot of money and that fact that it appears that he WANTS to be part of the youth movement by the Vikings. HE WANTS TO! Key phrase....

As of now the only visit the Vikings have set is Geoff Schwartz on Monday and O.J. Atogwe this week as well. Hopefully that changes and the Vikings start looking closely at the talent available and the talent we already have and quit ignoring the needs that the Vikings have.

Vikings re-sign Evans, what about Henderson?

On Friday, Vikings re-signed DT Fred Evans. I have not obtained the finances of this re-signing as of yet. The Vikings seemed focused on finding a good DT within it's ranks, between Remi Ayodele, Letroy Guion and Fred Evans along with Kevin Williams. However with Kevin Williams entering his 9th season, it would still bode well for the Vikings to draft a DT in the middle rounds. As I've mentioned previously, I'll be mocking a DT at the end of the 3rd or 4th once compensatory picks are announced.

But what about the LB positions? Erin Henderson has been expressing frustration that he is not yet signed, and I've seen the fans getting frustrated as well. It is clear the Erin has a strong following of Vikings Fans that all want to see him resigned. But the Vikings are taking their time. It's also unsure if they Vikings will resign his brother, E.J. Personally, I'd like to see Erin resigned but get more youthful in the ILB position, even dipping in the ILB free agency pool and picking up one of the remaining ILBs still available (Tulloch, Hawthorne or Lofton). But the Vikings are taking their time, despite the frustration of their fans and the slowing down of the stadium bill in the legislature. But as Spielman continues to take his time and being deliberate, I'm with the majority in telling him to get Erin Henderson a contract!

Who is Nick Taylor?

The Vikings made their next free agent signing by signing some guy named Nick Taylor to a 3 year reserve/futures contract. Nick Taylor is a former point guard at Florida International University. During the pro day at FIU, Nick Taylor ran the 40, recording a 4.34 and 4.27. He is 5'10" and 165 lbs. It's reported that he will best given the opportunity to go for a corner, kick returner and wide receiver spot. I think the Vikings have sunk to a new low. If they want to improve the CB position, PLEASE, look at some of the quality CB's still on the market! I wonder how much longer the brass in the front office at Winter Park are going to string everyone along, because I for one am sick of it. On a positive note though, they are still looking at bringing Panthers G Geoff Schwartz in for a visit on Monday. He did not sign with the Lions today after his visit, but states that it went well and two doctors have given him a clean bill of health. Also, I heard a rumor, but have been unable to confirm, a visit by OJ Atogwe on Monday. I'm not going to talk more about that until it's confirmed but I will say that that's better than looking at Alan Ball for the S position.

2012 Mock Draft - Updated 3/16/12

So just for fun, I decided to mock what I'd like to see the Vikings do in the draft based on current needs. This is my first time doing a mock draft so bear with me!

Round 4, pick 3: Levy Adcock, OT/G, Oklahoma State - Adcock struggled a bit in pass protection but did well with run blocking. He would fit in well as a right guard or even right tackle. He did play some LT but likely wouldn't fit in here unless he is able to quicken himself to keep up with pass rush in the next level.

**Alternate Pick - George Iloka, S, Boise State**

Round 5, pick 3: Brandon Taylor, S, LSU - This pick would help address the mess that are our safeties and assuming that Janzen Jackson of McNeese State is already picked. This pick would allow Mistral Raymond to move to the SS safety position and Taylor could compete for the FS position and add depth to the DBs.

**Alternate Pick - Andrew Datko, T/G, Florida State**

Round 6, pick 6 (From Cleveland): Shawn Loiseau, ILB, Merrimack - Coming from a Divison II school, Loiseau will need development but has shown promise and has the size to be a good ILB in a 4-3 defense.

Round 7, pick 3: Desmond Wynn, G, Rutgers - Good run blocker with athleticism, but struggles against the pass rush. Good developmental prospect.

Round 7, pick 16 (from New England): Antwuan Reed, CB, Pittsburgh - Good down field protection but could easily get beat on quick passes due to his quick turning to run with the receiver. Poor ball skills to make plays despite quick reaction on routes.

The Vikings lost Round 6, Pick 3 to Washington for the horrible Donovan McNabb trade. It is also said the Vikings will get two compensatory picks for Sidney Rice and Ray Edwards. And looking at some mocks of the distribution of compensatory picks, the Vikings could get a 3rd, 4th and 7th round. This will give us a total of 11 picks. I'll update this mock periodically, espcially once they hand out the compensatory picks.

Chris Cook not guilty plus more free agency talk

So news broke a few hours ago the Vikings CB Chris Cook was found not guilty on all charges stemming from an arrest last October. It also appears the NFL will not be punishing Cook either. This is good news for the Vikings whose secondary is in dire straights right now. Cook coming back, which it appears will happen given statements from the Vikings, will bring a little life to the secondary, but a little is all. The secondary is still in significant need of help!! And where do the Vikings turn?? Alan Ball, DB, Cowboys. This doesn't exactly set off any bells and whistles. Ball had some success, but don't think he's the starter we need. It is noted that he did play in the S position at times, and that could be what the Vikings are looking at, as that is needed also. But CB is needed much more and if you read my list of desired CBs from yesterday, Tracy Porter is going to be visiting the Bengals soon. However, they have Aaron Ross visiting them tonight and staying there tonight, which could be signed, leaving Tracy Porter as a free agent (hopefully), which the Vikings could then pursue (doubtful).

Also revisiting my blog from yesterday, one of the ILBs I suggested the Vikings move towards, Dan Connor, is now a Cowboy. Additionally, Lofton is getting heavy interest from the Saints, Bucs and rumor of the Eagles. He will likely be off the market very soon. That leaves Tulloch, Hawthorne and Blackburn left in the running for the best ILBs still available, and Hawthorne is getting heavy interest also. As for WRs, Eddie Royal is in San Diego and looks like he's going to be a Charger next season. Manningham didn't seem to be a good fit in San Francisco and is visiting the Rams tonight.

And more and more I'm thinking the Vikings overpaid for Carlson (entering his 5th season missing his 4th due to injury), 5 years/$25 million, $11 guaranteed. Especially when Grubbs (G) signed 5 years/$36 million, $19 guaranteed with the Saints, and G was a much bigger need than TE for the Vikings. Still not sure what the front office was thinking, even if he pans out to be really good. And definitely don't know what they were thinking cutting Hutch (who signed with the Titans today) if they didn't need the cap room and didn't plan on getting a proven G in the free agency. But as I mentioned in one of yesterday's blogs, I'm going to give them a chance to prove their plan with Johnson and Fusco going to the G positions.

The other reason I'm so concerned with the Vikings sitting so idly during this free agency is with the current stadium deal. A 3-13 team is pushing so hard to get a new stadium when they've lost a lot of confidence among the fans (which includes many of the politicians in the state) due to lack luster moves by the front office (yes, I disagreed with giving Spielman the GM position), including sitting idly in the free agency! The stadium deal stalled yesterday and appeared to move backwards today!! You'd think they'd want to bring back some confidence from the people that they need the support of and not keep telling them to sit and wait. Sure, we're not one or two players away from being a contender, but one or two play makers would help! And it would sure bring back some of the confidence they need by looking like a front office that is making moves to improve the team in any way they can. But hey, what do I know. I'm not a GM, I'm just an amateur blogger.

John Carlson Is A Viking!

Early this afternoon, the Vikings met with and signed Seahawks TE John Carlson to a 5 year/$25 million deal with $11 million guaranteed. This comes before the departure of Visanthe Shiancoe, who is looking at meeting with the Seahawks now! Carlson was drafted in 2008 in the 2nd Round (38th overall). He is a product of Notre Dame, just as our current star TE, Kyle Rudolph. Both are large, receiving TE's, that if they are productive, will resemble the match up nightmares of Gronkowski/Hernandez. Since starting, Carlson has caught 137 passes for a total of 1,519 yards and 15 touchdowns. That was with sitting out all of 2011 due to tearing his labrum in his shoulder. He reports that his shoulder is now good and feels he can be good again. While I have some excitement for this signing, I still give it a C+. I give it this rating because TE was not the Vikings biggest need. Also some concern that maybe they slightly overpaid for him, but as one person put it, it's not a #2 signing, it's a #1b. Additionally, Rudolph and Carlson are superb run blockers, so we will need additional blockers to help Adrian Peterson. But I am hopeful that this will prove to be a good off season sign by the Vikings and provide Ponder with a much needed weapon. SKOL!!

2012 Viking's Free Agency Part Duex!

So I fully understand the Vikings methodical approach to rebuilding the team. A lot of successful teams have done it this way as well such as the Patriots and Packers. However there are still a number of needs on this team that might not be able to be addressed through the draft, but could be obtained through the free agency. Especially since Spielman said he wants youth. Below are a list of free agents remaining at the end of day 2 that I feel the Vikings should target to fill major needs (in my order of choice of course)...

WR:
1) Jerome Simpson, 26, Bengals
2) Braylon Edwards, 29, 49ers
3) Mario Manningham, 26, Giants **Signed with 49ers**
4) Eddie Royal, 26, Broncos  **Signed with Chargers**
5) Early Doucet, 26, Cardinals

CB:
1) Tracy Porter, 26 , Saints
2) William Middleton, 26 , Jaguars
3) Jason Allen, 29, Texans  **Signed with Bengals**
4) Chris Carr, 29, Ravens
5) William Gay, 27, Steelers

ILB:
1) Stephen Tulloch, 27, Lions
2) Curtis Lofton, 26, Falcons
3) Dan Connor, 26, Panthers  **Signed with Cowboys**
4) David Hawthorne, 27, Seahawks
5) Chase Blackburn, 29, Giants

Any one of those 15 free agents would provide the Vikings with a big improvement in a position of dire need. And as always, I will continue to say that we need to sign OLB Erin Henderson! As for the WR's, they would provide a #2 wide out to put across from Harvin, along with the 2 TE set now, of course, and would likely still need improvement through this draft or in 2013. But if we did get one of them, it would provide us with the opportunity to address all of the other needs on the team in this draft and address WR in 2013.
There's still a lot of time left in this free agency and that will tell us what the brains at Winter Park decide to do to move our team in the right direction.

2012 Vikings Free Agency

From what I'm hearing, the Vikings have minimal desire to pursue any O-linemen in the free agency. Much of this is giving the picture that the O-line is going to be a 2 year project. Current projections have us drafting Matt Kahlil, the stud LT from USC, 3rd overall in the draft. This will help shore up a poor left side. This will also result in moving C. Johnson to the LG position, where it is stated he will be more comfortable. John Sullivan will remain our starting center. The RG position will be filled by the 2nd year Brandon Fusco, who was praised for his progress last year. And Loadholt will remain the RT. There was no talk about D. Love competing for that RT position, which could be good. While I'm not thrilled about this, I'm willing to give it a shot.
But without the Vikings pursuing O-line in day 1 of the draft, I'm shocked they did not go for one of the deep threat receivers or shut-down corners. With the salary cap space, it would have been well spent on one of those positions. Instead, the Vikings are to bring in 4th year TE John Carlson (Seattle) for a visit today. Like Rudolph, who will be our #1 TE, he is a product of Notre Dame, emerging out of the 2008 draft in the 2nd Round (38th overall). Like Rudolph, he is a soft hands, pass catching TE. He did sit out on IR in 2011 due to a shoulder injury, but if that is healed having both TE's would have the Patriots' Hernandez/Gronkowski feel.
And as far as our free agents go, we signed DT Guion to a 3 year deal and QB Rosefels has resigned also but there is no word on any potential re-signing of OLB Erin Henderson. This would be a smart move for the Vikings, thereby only leaving one hole in the MLB position. Secondly, if the proposed O-line in the first paragraph bodes well for Ponder, if we can resign our FA WR's cheap, that may provide some weapons for Ponder as he will have a bit more time for them to get down field or get open. The secondary likely won't see any help this free agency, and will likely be "upgraded" early in the draft. However, many of the CB's that fall out of the first round have a ring similar to that of Cook with off field issues. But that Vikings appear to like that so we should be set.
Anyway, that's my thoughts on Day 1 of the free agency. There's still lots of time left, and who knows what moves the Vikings will make, but I must say I'm not impressed with the brass doing minimal in the FA the first day.
